First square 2MP CMOS image sensors for endoscopes ...

Omnivision has developed the first square CMOS image sensor, aimed at disposable and reusable medical endoscopes.

The resolution of the OH02B image sensor is 1500×1500 pixels and the measures 2.5 x 2.5mm by using Omnivision’s PureCel Plus-S stacked-die technology. The image sensor is aimed at for medical imaging in gastrointestinal, ENT, orthopedic, surgical, dental, and veterinarian endoscopes, catheters and guide wires. Arthroscopy Instruments Suppliers

It is available in the smallest form factor CameraCubeChip package for disposable designs and uses Omnivision’s AntLinx proprietary technology, which provides a 4m link directly from the endoscope camera to the camera control unit (CCU) tower.

The AntLinx digital interface uses four thin micro-coaxial cables and so is not affected by noise or electromagnetic interference and has minimal electromagnetic conduction to boost the video quality.

“The medical industry is moving to single-use endoscopes to minimize cross-contamination and improve patient safety. CCD-based image sensors cannot meet today’s high-performance endoscope requirements and are being phased out,” said Richard Yang, senior marketing manager at Omnivision.

“CMOS image sensors, such as the OH02B, are critical for the disposable endoscope market because they enable high resolution and small size, generate very low heat at the tip of the scope design, and are cost-effective for one-time use. Omnivision’s CameraCubeChip design provides further size advantages and simplifies design resources and the supply chain.”

Omnivision is ISO13485 certified for medical components which are EMC and EMI tested to help streamline the OEM’s FDA approval process. The OCH2B imager is also biocompatible and waterproof, and the OH02B camera unit is autoclavable for sterilising for reuse. It does not require tuning or calibration.

Samples of the OH02B imager and OCH2B camera are available now.
