Governor Glenn Youngkin visited Culpeper on Oct. 6 to congratulate one of Culpeper’s oldest institutions on the expansion of its cast iron foundry.

“What an exciting moment to be here to celebrate together a huge milestone for a tremendous company,” Youngkin said. “It takes a huge effort on behalf of lots of people to being things to happen, but it starts with vision. It starts with a vision from leaders.”

Bingham & Taylor, serves as North America’s predominant supplier of meter and valve access and security systems for underground utilities, was established in 1849 in Buffalo, New York but relocated to Culpeper in the 1940s, where they currently operate their cast-iron foundry. A silhouette of a buffalo included in their company logo pays homage to their roots.

B&T has three manufacturing plants – the primary plant in Culpeper, an injection-molding plastics plant and a blow-molding plastics plant in Fredericksburg. They also have a distribution facility located in Corona, California to assist in serving west coast based customers.

Now a 100% woman-owned business, B&T were the original manufacturer and patent holder of the “Buffalo-Style” valve box, which is a vertical cast iron sleeve, which houses the shut-off valve for a water service line.

Youngkin and other guests including Sen. Bryce Reeves, Del. Nick Freitas, Mayor Frank Reaves, Board of Supervisors Chairman Gary Deal and more attended to show their support for the company’s newly unveiled electric melt system.

The new system has proven not only to improve safety by reducing injuries by over 90%, it also affected the company's environmental footprint by reducing CO emissions by 98% and increasing recycled content abilities for their products to contain greater than 99% recycled content. It also significantly expanded production capacity, which resulted in adding 32 hourly and 13 salaried/professional jobs into the Culpeper community.

“Over the years, we have consistently created innovative products and accessories to address a variety of performance, durability and security issues in the industry, which has allowed us to have the edge on many of our competitors,” said Owner Laura Grondin. “I have a strong commitment to the community and our employees to ensure Bingham & Taylor is sustainable and viable for years to come.”

“This expansion and modernization is just one of many opportunities for us to invest in the communities we work in and serve.”

B&T has invested $23 million dollars over the last five years into this expansion.

“Growth is a good thing,” Youngkin said. “I know, at B&T, your growth is a good thing. You’ve expanded and it takes a huge effort to do that.”

“Manufacturing is coming back to Virginia, and I believe strongly that Made in America means Made in Virginia,” he continued.
