LEHIGHTON, Pa. - A new business is spreading cheer, making events pop and creating one-of-a-kind gifts in Carbon County.

Robbie’s Balloons and More, a unique balloon boutique specializing in custom gifts, event decorations and live entertainment, will hold a ribbon-cutting celebration noon to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 114 S. Fourth St. in Lehighton.

Owner and world-renowned balloon artist Robbie Furman has been working with balloons for more than 30 years, decorating thousands of events and teaching countless students how to create balloon arches, animals, centerpieces and more.

A New Jersey native, Furman most recently operated a balloon business in California for three years before recently moving back to the East Coast to be closer to his mother.

“I found Lehighton and fell in love with the town,” Furman said. “I’m looking to put roots down here and make this my forever home. I love the people, the mountains, Jim Thorpe, everything.”

Furman's balloon-centric career began more than 30 years ago, when he started making balloon crowns, animals and other engaging pieces for his brother and sister’s children.

“I wanted to be the fun uncle who always had a balloon in his pocket, and it just kept growing from there,” Furman said. “Eventually, it got to a point where people started seeing what I was doing and they wanted to hire me.”

Robbie's Balloons and More offers a wide variety of handmade gifts and centerpieces, including “Bearoons” (balloon bears), “Ballowers” (balloon flowers) and “Flurkins” (flower bouqets made from paper napkins).

His “Lootles,” balloons made to look like people, are one of the business’ most requested items.

Furman can make Lootles look like college graduates, sports players, brides and grooms, popular movie characters and more to match your event’s theme.

Other balloon creations include arches, swags, columns and wall backdrops, all suitable for photo ops.

The business also offers floating balloons, balloon drops for New Year’s Eve parties and other special occasions and balloon sculptures of varying sizes – including life-size cars, trees and cartoon characters.

To celebrate Halloween, Furman’s created an immersive “haunted forest” out of balloons at his store, and he plans to create other immersive experiences including a walk-through gingerbread house in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

“I love creating photo ops and sculptures, and I always try to do things that people have never seen before,” Furman said.

Over the decades, Furman has made downloadable “Twisticology” videos, where he teaches individuals how to make a wide array of balloon décor via various twisting techniques and designs.

He’s also offered in-person instruction, with people worldwide reaching out to him to learn how to make his Bearoons, Lootles and other creations.

“People started asking me to come and teach them,” Furman said.

“So, I ended up traveling the world. I went all over – Mexico, Canada, Australia, Japan, Brazil, Guatemala. I went to about 30 countries to teach balloons. I also did balloons for the White House lawn on the Fourth of July, and my balloons have been on episodes of TV shows like ‘All My Children,’ ‘One Life to Live,’ ‘The View’ and ‘Live with Regis and Kelly.’ I’ve also done balloons for movies.”

Furman describes his life thus far as a “roller coaster,” and he’s looking forward to continuing the ride in Lehighton.

Wherever Furman's lived, he’s enjoyed volunteering, and he is looking to get involved with various local organizations, including the Lehighton Area Lioness Lions Club.

“I’m definitely big on giving back to my community,” Furman said. “It’s what I love doing.”

Robbie’s Balloons is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and by appointment on Saturdays and Sundays.

The Oct. 18 event, hosted by the Carbon Chamber and Economic Development Corporation, will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 12:30 p.m. and refreshments.

You might say Robbie Furman is a little twisted.
